✖️ Multiplication Arrays

How many in all,
when groups of the same size come together?

Change the number of groups and how many are in each group with sliders, and see in a picture why multiplication gives that answer.

Multiplication is really just a short way of writing "add the same number over and over." If there are 3 bags of candy with 4 candies each, that's 4+4+4=12, which we can write simply as 3×4=12. When you line circles up in groups, you don't have to count them one by one — knowing the number of groups and the size of each group tells you the total right away.

Here's the interesting part: 3 groups of 4 and 4 groups of 3 look different, but the total is the same 12. That's why 3×4 and 4×3 always give the same answer.

Move the sliders to change the number of groups and the amount in each group, and watch how the circles grow — and check for yourself whether the answer stays the same when you swap the order of the two numbers.
