With just 4 colors,
you can color any map

It has been proven that even a map with complicated borders can be colored with just 4 colors so that no two neighboring regions share the same color (the Four Color Theorem). Color the map below yourself and see it in action.

Choose a color from the palette below, then click a region on the map to color it. Two regions sharing a boundary cannot have the same color — if you break the rule, they will be highlighted with a red border.

Why are four colors enough? This is the famous mathematical theorem called the “Four Color Theorem.” The question was first raised in 1852, but the proof was so complicated that it was not completed until 1976, with the help of computers. There were simply too many cases to check by hand.
