Apply the Same Move to Both Sides
of the Scale and Solve for x

You'll get a random problem. Subtract any number from both sides, or divide both sides by any number, keeping the scale balanced the whole time. Once x's coefficient becomes 1 and the constant term disappears, you've found the value of x yourself.

An equation is just like a two-pan balance scale. Just as the scale stays level only when both sides weigh the same, the values on either side of the equals sign (=) must always be equal too. The goal of solving an equation is to isolate x while keeping that balance intact.

We rely on the properties of equality: subtracting the same number from both sides, or dividing both sides by the same number, keeps the scale balanced. Just as the scale would tip if you only acted on one side, the equation stops being true if you only change one side.

For example, if you know the total amount three people split, you find one person's share by dividing the total by 3, right? That's the exact same idea — applying the same operation to both sides. Keep repeating operations until x's coefficient becomes 1 and the constant term disappears.
