Cut a single square into seven pieces, and you can build hundreds of different shapes with them — isn't that amazing? This puzzle, called the tangram (in Chinese, "seven-cleverness board"), started in China hundreds of years ago and is still beloved by children all over the world today. With just seven pieces — 2 large triangles, 1 medium triangle, 2 small triangles, 1 square, and 1 parallelogram — you can represent all kinds of shapes, from people and animals to boats and buildings.
The tangram's pieces weren't cut at random. Every piece is made to a precise ratio, so no matter how you arrange them, they can always fit together perfectly. For example, the two small triangles combined take up exactly the same area as the square, and the medium triangle alone has the same area as the two small triangles too. Discovering these hidden area relationships between the pieces is one of the tangram's quiet delights.
Playing with a tangram naturally sharpens your sense of shape. Turning a piece by 90 or 45 degrees builds a hands-on feel for rotation, and flipping the parallelogram when you need to gives you a natural, hands-on experience with the idea of reflection too. Figuring out which two pieces' edges fit together exactly also builds intuition about angles — like getting a feel for what shape appears where a square's 90° angle meets a triangle's 45° angle.
The number of shapes you can build with a tangram runs into the thousands, by known count alone. There's an endless range of ways to enjoy it — from "classic shapes" that reassemble all seven pieces with no gaps, like a square or a large triangle, to freely creative "picture shapes" like a walking person, a flying bird, or a sailboat. The fact that the exact same pieces can produce completely different pictures is exactly what keeps people coming back to this puzzle again and again.
In practice, the tangram is also widely used as an educational tool for building spatial reasoning. Once you've built up experience turning and flipping shapes around on a flat surface, math concepts you'll meet later — like 3D shapes or geometric transformations (reflection, rotation, translation) — become much easier to grasp. That's because a sense built by hands-on touch tends to stick around far longer than something learned by sight alone.
When enjoying this with kids, it's best not to jump straight into a complicated picture — start with a simple shape like a square or a large triangle. Let them feel the satisfaction of filling in every piece first, and then move on to the many silhouettes you can find online (a cat, a house, a rocket, and so on) — that way, the fun lasts a lot longer.
