Because we're so used to writing the answer after "3+4=", it's easy to mistake the equals sign for a marker showing "where the answer goes." But its real meaning is "the left and right sides have the same value."
Both sides equal 7, so this equation is true. The right side isn't "the answer" — it's just another way of writing the same value.
2Thinking of a balance scale makes it click
Put the same weight on both sides of a balance scale, and it settles level. The equals sign works the same way — when both sides of an equation have the same value, they're "balanced," and when they don't, the scale tips to one side.
3□ and △ are symbols for an unknown number
Even before learning letters like x and y, you can write a rule using symbols like □ and △. "△ = □ + 3" is a rule saying: whatever number □ is, add 3 to it to get △.
Even as □ changes, the rule "add 3" always stays the same.
4Knowing the rule lets you predict future values
If you know the rule "△ = □ × 2," you can find △ just by calculating — no matter how large □ gets, without ever having to count it out by hand.
5Try playing like this
- Find the moment the scale balances. Move the sliders and try to find several combinations where the "=" sign appears.
- Switch rules and compare the tables. Compare how differently "□+3" and "□×2" turn the same □ value into △.
- Try solving the true-or-false quiz in your head. Build the habit of calculating both sides yourself to check whether they're really equal.
