๐Ÿ“ฆ Solid Shape Families

Box shape? Cylinder shape?
Or a sphere shape?

Objects around us can be grouped into three big shape families. Look at an object and guess which shape family it belongs to!

A delivery box, a tin can, and a soccer ball all look different, but each belongs to one of three shape families. If it has a flat part when you touch it, it's a box shape. If the side is round but the top and bottom are flat, it's a cylinder shape. If it's round no matter which way you touch it, it's a sphere shape.

You'll learn these three families again in school under their formal names: rectangular prism, cylinder, and sphere. You can also tell them apart by how well they roll โ€” box shapes barely roll, cylinder shapes only roll when lying on their side, and sphere shapes roll well no matter which way you push them.

Look at the picture of the object, notice whether it has a flat surface, a round surface, or neither, and then pick its shape family.
