The slope of stairs and ramps
is actually the slope of a linear function

Adjust the horizontal run and vertical rise to build your own ramp. The value rise ÷ run is exactly the slope a of the linear function y=ax.

Slope tells you “how much the vertical position changes when you move 1 unit horizontally.” Whether it is stairs, a ramp, or a hill, slope = vertical rise ÷ horizontal run is calculated in exactly the same way.

This value is exactly the same concept as the slope a in the linear function y = ax. Even if you change the numbers for rise and run, the ramp has the same steepness whenever their ratio (after simplification) is the same — just like similar triangles of different sizes.
