Bigger multiplication and division โ€”
break it apart to make it easy

Two-digit multiplication gets easier when you break it apart by place value. Division makes sense once you see how many equal groups you get, and what's left over.

Multiplying two-digit numbers all at once can get confusing fast. But for something like 34 ร— 6, split the two-digit number into its tens (30) and ones (4), multiply each separately, then add the results (30ร—6=180, 4ร—6=24, 180+24=204) โ€” and it becomes much easier. This works thanks to a property called the distributive property of multiplication.

Division is the opposite situation: sharing objects out into equal groups. If you pack 38 items into groups of 4, how many groups do you get, and how many are left over? That's exactly the quotient and the remainder. It's a calculation you use all the time โ€” packing items into boxes at a store, or sharing snacks equally among friends.

Division is just like sharing objects out into groups of the same size. The number of groups you get is the quotient, and whatever is left over that can't be shared evenly is the remainder. In the picture below, purple is one group, and orange is what's left over.
