🗺️ Map Scale Lab

If 1 cm on a map,
how many meters is it in reality?

A map scale expresses the proportion between map distance and real distance. Choose a scale and calculate the real distance from a measured map distance.

A scale of 1:50,000 means that 1 cm on the map represents 50,000 cm (=500 m) in reality. You can calculate using the proportion map distance : real distance = 1 : scale.

Measured map distance5 cm
Map distance 5cm × scale 50,000 = Real distance 250,000cm
