For the scale to be level,
both sides must be equal

There is a set weight on the left pan of the balance. Add weights to the right side until the scale becomes level. That is what the equals sign (=) means.

The equals sign (=) means "both sides are the same." Just like a balance scale! The scale becomes level only when the weight on the left is equal to the weight on the right. If they are different, the scale tips toward the heavier side.
