Sudoku has no calculation in it at all. No addition, no multiplication needed. Yet it's become one of the most beloved number puzzles in the world — because this game is really about logical reasoning, not arithmetic. The digits 1, 2, 3, 4 are just four different symbols, and what actually matters is the process of reasoning through "which symbol can go in this cell, and which symbols can't."
There's exactly one rule. The same number can never appear twice within the same row, the same column, or the same box (a small region marked off by bold lines). It's remarkable that this single rule alone is enough to create a puzzle this complex and engaging. The name "sudoku" itself comes from a Japanese phrase meaning "the digit must occur only once."
The most fundamental strategy for solving sudoku is process of elimination. Pick a blank cell, and cross off the numbers already present in its row and box one by one — often, only one possible number is left standing at the end. This way of thinking — "find the answer by ruling out what it can't be" — is an incredibly powerful mental tool used identically not just in math but in scientific experiments, detective reasoning, and even the way computer programs track down errors (debugging).
Sudoku can be freely scaled from a small 4×4 grid all the way up to 9×9, or even 16×16. The bigger the grid, the more possibilities you have to consider, and the difficulty rises exponentially. That's why it's much easier to first learn the rules and strategies on a small size like 4×4 or 6×6, and only move up to the standard 9×9 once you're comfortable.
Interestingly, sudoku is rooted in a much older mathematical idea called a "Latin square." A Latin square is a problem the 18th-century mathematician Euler studied, about arranging symbols in a grid so no row or column repeats one. Sudoku is essentially a version of that with one extra rule added — the "box." Mathematicians today still seriously study sudoku-related questions, like "how few hints are needed for a puzzle to have exactly one solution."
When working through this with kids, it's best not to jump straight into something hard — start with 4×4, and practice together saying out loud "what's already in this row?" or "what's already in this box?" while crossing off possibilities one at a time. Seeing a wrong entry turn red and fixing it themselves also builds the habit of reviewing their own logic without being afraid of mistakes.
